It’s been over two years since Bungie finished work on their last Halo game, Halo Reach. Since then, the company has made it clear that they’ve been working on something big and new, though we’ve only heard tiny snippets of info regarding the project. Now, that project has been revealed.
Titled Destiny, the game’s plot is set far into the future. Following humankind’s exploration to other locations in the solar system and its subsequent colonization of those planets, an alien race wiped out much of man and forced him back onto Earth. However, another alien entity – a large sphere known as the Traveler – appeared over Earth and protected mankind from total extinction. Humans rebuilt their world directly beneath the sphere in the form of a large city, and over time, received magic-like abilities from the Traveler. By the time Destiny occurs, people have begun to once again explore the universe, though they discover that their alien foes now occupy their former colonies. As “Guardians,” players are tasked with eliminating these aliens and preventing them from wiping out humanity for good.
The game itself is described as a “shared world shooter.” Similar to games like Journey, the game world is seamlessly filled with online players rather than using a standard matchmaking system as in most online games. This system allows for players to shape the in-game universe with their actions through player-driven and story-driven events. While the mechanic of organically connecting players is somewhat similar to an MMO’s structure, Destiny does not require a subscription fee, and the game is designed to also allow solo play, though it must be connected to the internet regardless of how many players a person is paired with.
As stated before, Destiny is a shooter, and similarly to Halo, the game is mostly played from a first-person perspective. While many other gameplay details have yet to be given, Bungie has stated that the game allows for three different character classes: the Titan, which is similar to a standard soldier class; the Warlock, which primarily utilizes the “magic” granted by the Traveler; and the Hunter, which specializes in stealth and long-range equipment. Players can equip their characters with new armor and weapons as they progress through the game. In addition, the game allows for players to customize and use their own spaceships to travel between planets in the Milky Way. Player-vs-player combat will also be present, though players are given the choice of allowing it or not. Outside of the game, a mobile application will be offered that allows users to keep track of their in-game story and stat progression while also affecting their friends’ progress in the game, though specific details have not been announced at this time.
Destiny is currently in development by Bungie, and will be published next year by Activision for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, though “future generation technology” releases are also planned.
