A sequel to the first Deus Ex novel is coming this summer in the form of a mobile action-stealth shooter.
Deus Ex: The Fall is the next installment of the Deus Ex series. The game’s story is set in the year 2027, the same year as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and takes place directly after the 2011 novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect, featuring several characters from the book. In the game, Ben Saxon – protagonist of both Icarus Effect and The Fall – has left the terrorist group known as the Tyrants and is set on making the drug Neuropozyne, which is required for augmented people to survive, more readily available to the augmented.
In terms of gameplay, the game plays in a fashion similar to the last main Deus Ex entry, 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Players will mainly play the game from a first-person perspective, and explore locales such as Panama by using either stealth or a more frontal approach. Like Human Revolution, the game features a cover system that briefly brings the player out to a third-person point of view, and an augmentation system that allows players to spend Praxis Kits earned from experience or exploration on upgrades such as the ability to see enemies through walls, be less noticeable when hacking computers, land safely when falling a long distance, and become momentarily invisible.
Deus Ex: The Fall is currently being developed as a collaboration between Deus Ex: Human Revolution creators Eidos Montréal, Frontlines: Fuel of War developer N-Fusion Interactive, and Square Enix’s recently formed European mobile division. The game will be available on the iOS App Store this summer for $6.99 in North America.
It’s not really what I was hoping for, but it still looks like it could be good. Really looks like they got the Human Revolution gameplay working on touch screens, though a lot of dual-stick games haven’t played particularly well on touch screens, so I’m a bit skeptical about that. Still, I look forward to the story at the very least, and it gives me a reason to read Icarus Effect at the very least. I heard it was a good novel.
Huh.
Square-Enix, I know you love your mobile games but this just feels… weird. Not that I’ve ever played a Deus Ex but… on a mobile device? I just… huh.
