Microsoft has revealed that they have successfully gotten backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 titles running on Xbox One.
Over 100 titles will be backwards compatible by the time the program launches this holiday; today’s demo featured Mass Effect. For digital games, you only have to download the game to your Xbox and start playing. For disc-based games, the download will begin as soon as you insert the disc, and you’ll have to keep the disc in the drive to play.
In addition, the games will be able to utilize Xbox One features such as game DVR, screenshots, and streaming. No additional work is required from developers to get their games backwards compatible – they just have to approve making them available on the system.
The program is available now to Xbox preview members and will officially launch this holiday.

Very curious how they’re actually doing this, since they said before it wasn’t possible due to technical limitations.
Hopefully Sony follows suit and I can buy a PS4 guilt-free and stock up on PS3 games 😀
I think this is awesome. Easily my favourite announcement up until anything in Sony’s conference. 😛
It’s great that they’ve listened to fans who wanted to completely move on from the 360. I love that it’s free, I love that devs don’t have to put a lot of work into it, I love that it seems to work with all the Xbone features, and it just seems like a really solid program. Kudos, Microsoft.
I was honestly shocked when I heard they announced this; 360 compatibility was something I never thought they would (or could, to be honest) do. Now with that said, it’s DEFINITELY a pleasant surprise.
Sad to see the list of games start out so small for the preview program, but I’m at least glad it’ll go to over 100 in a few months. Can’t way to be able to finally play through Reach again!
The coolest part of this is that they’ll make use of Xbox One features like screenshots. That is nice
