If you’re a Nintendo fan, chances are the concept of Super Smash Bros. appeals to you: numerous Nintendo (and some non-Nintendo) franchises collide in one huge game full of content and fanservice. If you’ve any interest in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, you may be happy to hear that Nintendo is releasing a demo for the game prior to its release.
Announced during Nintendo’s live Treehouse presentation today, the downloadable demo for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will give players a small glimpse of the game when it becomes available on the 3DS eShop on September 19 in North America and Europe. The game features five playable characters (Mario, Link, Pikachu, Villager, and Mega Man) and one stage (Battlefield), and allows players to play with computers and/or up to three other demo owners via local wireless play. If September 19 seems too far off, check your email: if you achieved platinum status in this past Club Nintendo year, Nintendo may send you four download codes for the demo today, letting you share the demo with friends. While the public version of the demo will be limited at 30 uses per 3DS, the version available via Club Nintendo has no play restrictions.
If you can’t wait until next week for the demo, and aren’t given a code by Nintendo, be sure to check out 4P in the coming days as we give our impressions of Nintendo’s latest brawler. If you can wait until next week for the demo, then… well, we understand. We still love you, patient friend.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS releases on October 3 in North America and Europe, and on October 4 in Australia. The game was released in Japan today.

I was just playing it. Villager’s pretty interesting. His/her side-B and down-B moves are cool. Not crazy about Mega Man though.
I’ve been playing it a bit. My best two in Brawl are Toon Link and Lucas. Though I can survive with Sonic and Pikachu as well. And only Pikachu made into the demo. He seems a bit different. Less zippy. Quick Attack seems off a bit. I did really well with Mario though. Mega Man feels a bit clunky. I don’t understand why Villager is like a Balloon Fighter.
Graphics and presentation are impressive. It was all very smooth. It feels like your playing Smash. Which is good. And I was dreading the circle-pad, but it was acceptable. Not preferred by any means (no idea why someone would want to use the 3DS as a controller on the Wii U game), but better than I was expecting
I wish the demo had a couple more characters and one more stage, but otherwise, I’m really enjoying it. I’m very impressed at how well the game runs on 3DS (It really is pushing its limits; you can’t browse Miiverse or the Internet on the Home Menu while playing Smash, a least on a non-New 3DS), especially considering that the action stays at 60FPS even with 3D on. It also looks pretty decent.
As for the characters, I’m loving Link and Mega Man. I typically only play as Link in Melee, but he felt way too slow for me in Brawl; thankfully, I have no issues with him in Smash 4. I’m still trying to learn all of Mega Man’s various moves, but I love what I’ve played so far, especially his side smash.
