One feature seen in the Nintendo DSi but not the Nintendo 3DS was the ability to use a custom photo as a wallpaper on the system’s home menu. Later this year, Nintendo will introduce even more customization to its current line of handhelds.
Announced alongside the New 3DS and New 3DS XL earlier today in a Nintendo Direct, an upcoming firmware update for all 3DS and 2DS systems will enable custom menu themes. These themes can display images across both 3DS screens, and alter icons, folders, sound effects, and music. So far, Nintendo has shown examples of themes based on The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and the Mario series. An image of these themes can be seen above.
The update that will enable theme support is set to become available in October. Themes will be available for download on the Nintendo eShop.

Cool if free. Not cool if not. I don’t care about themes too much. I’m not in my menu screen most of the time
