Disney has acquired Lucasfilm and all related subsidies, including LucasArts, for a cool $4.05 billion.
The sale includes the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, including all movies, video games, and related media. Along with the announcement of the acquisition, Disney has announced Star Wars Episode 7, to be released in 2015.
“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”
Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will take the reins from George Lucas as president of Lucasfilm. No word yet on how this sale will affect the various video game franchises produced by LucasArts, including the upcoming Star Wars 1313.
