As with Nintendo’s previous Nintendo Direct, which unveiled a slew of new Wii U games, today’s Direct mentioned several new first-party titles coming to the Nintendo 3DS this summer, as well as a release date for a long-anticipated 3DS Animal Crossing game.
The first title is a new entry in the Mario Golf series. Titled Mario Golf: World Tour, the game is currently in development by Camelot, the studio behind the Golden Sun RPG series and previous Mario Golf games. Characters shown to be included include Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser.
The next title is Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. As with previous Mario & Luigi games, Dream Team is an RPG that sees players exploring and battling as Nintendo’s red and green plumbers. The game’s story revolves around Mario entering Luigi’s dreams.
The final “new” game is an entry from Metroid Prime creators Retro Studios… though it isn’t quite the big new game that many have been hoping for from the team. 2010’s Donkey Kong Country Returns, the first Donkey Kong Country game to be developed by anyone other than Rare, is coming to Nintendo 3DS in the form of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Aside from 3D support, no additional content over the original Wii version has been announced. A 3D trailer for the game is available to view from the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.
In addition to the above games, Nintendo revealed the North American and European release dates for Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which are June 9 and June 14, respectively.
While we still don’t know the exact dates for three out of the four games mentioned above, it still seems like 3DS owners are in for a treat this year nonetheless.
