It’s no secret that 1991’s The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of the most beloved titles in the series. Later this year, Nintendo plans on releasing a successor to the game exclusively on Nintendo 3DS.
The new The Legend of Zelda game, tentatively titled A Link to the Past 2, is set in the same world as A Link to the Past, though it will feature its own unique story and dungeons. Like the majority of other handheld Zelda titles, and A Link to the Past itself, the game is played from an overhead perspective, though due to the 3DS’ 3D functionality, the game’s locales and dungeons will feature numerous elevations. In addition, new gameplay mechanics are being introduced, such as the ability for Link to turn into a drawing on the wall and slip through barred openings and cross gaps.
Like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 will be released this holiday season. A 3D trailer for the game is now available to download via the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

I don’t like A Link to the Past very much. A very weak entry in the series in my eyes, although monumental in shaping it. But, it hasn’t aged well. When I go to play it today I’m hit with horribly floaty controls and poor depth of field from the attempt at multi-layer dungeons on a 2D plane.
So, I’m sure this game will improve upon those aspects – and the 3D will be a huge benefit since it looks like they really want to emphasize vertical dungeons here.
But ALttP is so overdone though. The two Oracle games are directs sequels, as is Link’s Awakening. Then there was the Japan-only Ancient Stone Tablets which was like a Master Quest remix of ALttP. That whole Link-era, I think we’ve had enough. Also, if I really want to go on an ALttP nostalgia-yet-updated kick then I would turn to Four Swords Adventures. Looks a lot closer (and better) than this game.
