Ratchet & Clank has long been one of Sony’s most acclaimed and popular series, so it was only a matter of time until a film based on the games was announced.
Ratchet & Clank‘s plot follows a similar story to that of the first game in the series, with Ratchet – the last lombax in existence – and his robotic friend Clank setting out to defeat Chairman Drek, who is set on annihilating every planet in their galaxy. Along the way, the two team up with a group known as the Galactic Rangers to stop Drek.
The result of a collaboration between Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment, Ratchet & Clank is being directed by Jericca Cleland, who has previously worked on such films as Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2. In addition, series creators Insomniac Games are assisting with the film’s production, animation, and character development, while T.J. Fixman, the storywriter of the games, is penning the film’s script. Key voice talent from the games are also set to make a return for the film, including James A. Taylor, David Kaye, and Jim Ward.
Alongside the film’s announcement, Sony announced on its official PlayStation Blog that the series will be on sale on the PlayStation Store next week, though no specific deals have been announced at this time. The company also asked for fans to “stay tuned” for news on the PlayStation Vita edition of last year’s Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault and the PlayStation 3 remaster of 2005’s Ratchet: Deadlocked, which could mean the two are close to release.
Ratchet & Clank is set for release in theaters in early 2015.
