The final installment of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy is coming later this year, Square Enix has confirmed in the latest trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
The trailer, which can be seen above, depicts Lightning confronting her former allies after awakening from her 500-year-long crystal sleep. Both Noel Kreiss – co-protagonist of Final Fantasy XIII-2 – and Snow Villiers seem to have a bone to pick with Lightning, as they can each be seen fighting her in separate scenes. In addition, the trailer shows a bit more of Lumina, the mysterious girl who appears similar in appearance to the other protagonist of XIII-2, Lightning’s sister Serah Farron.
Announced in September 2012, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the third and final installment in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. The game depicts series protagonist Lightning awakening from her crystal slumber just thirteen days before the world’s end, as she is tasked by the god Bhunivelze with saving the souls of Nova Chrysalia – the combination of Gran Pulse and Valhalla from previous games – from destruction. Along the way, Lightning comes across her old allies – including Hope Estheim, who aids Lightning in her journey – and uncovers the truth behind the events of the series. The game features Lightning as the sole playable character, and features a variation of the Active Time Battle combat system from XIII and XIII-2, with specific actions mapped to the controller’s face buttons and more control given to the player over Lightning’s movement.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is in development at Square Enix, and will be released on November 21, 2013 in Japan, February 11, 2014 in North America, and February 14, 2014 in Europe. The game will be available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
