Sony today confirmed that Resistance 3 will be the first title to utilize what they are calling “PSN Pass”, a single-use registration code required for online play. Beginning with the release of Resistance 3 this September, PlayStation Network titles that are part of the PSN Pass program will ship with a one-time use code that must be entered to activate full online access. Gamers will either have to buy the game new, or purchase a new code if the game is bought second-hand, if they want to take the game online.
PSN Pass is similar to the online pass systems already used by publishers including EA and THQ to combat the growing used game market.

When I first read this news, I felt all indignant until I realized this is probably a smart idea. :/ Better this than ending DLC like some games were testing out.
Except it’s also kind of hard to justify, since it’s not like they need the revenue to KEEP the games online–there would be no more players on the servers than originally if someone buys a game that another person sold.
I don’t play games online on my PS3, really, but hopefully this won’t end up affecting me. /shrug
