Despite earlier claims to the contrary, Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai today announced that Vita would miss 2011 in North America and Europe, instead launching in early 2012.
Sony had originally claimed that the PSP successor would be available in at least one market before the end of 2011, but later at their E3 showing said that they were targeting a global launch “starting” at the end of this year. It seems that they’ve decided to go with the original option, as Japan will be the sole territory getting Vita in 2011.
In spite of the 3DS’s sudden steep price drop, Hirai said that Vita will still be releasing at the announced price point: $249 for the wi-fi only model and $299 for the wi-fi/3G model.
