It’s been almost a year since Microsoft announced the first true non-Bungie game, Halo 4. While a pre-rendered trailer was shown, few details regarding the game’s plot and gameplay were revealed. Now, however, developer 343 Industries has shed some light on the game’s features.
For the single player, 343i is focusing on telling a story that explores the Master Chief’s character more than any games have in the past; while external media, such as novels and comics, have given insight on the Chief’s backstory and personality, the games have generally not done so.
343i is also attempting to make the multiplayer better than it’s ever been. Previous multiplayer modes in the Halo franchise have had little to no story attached to them; for Halo 4, however, 343 Industries has crafted a story that shows just why red and blue Spartan IVs are fighting each other. The gameplay is being expanded as well, with pre-match weapon loadouts being added, as well as new character customization options. While some weapons from previous games will return, such as the battle rifle, they will be enhanced so that they still feel new. Multiplayer maps are being built from the ground up, with no single map returning from the game’s campaign or previous games.
While many details on Halo 4 are still being kept hidden away from the public – Microsoft is no doubt saving a full reveal for this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo – what has been announced so far is sure to whet the appetite of any Halo fan for the time being. Halo 4 is currently in development by 343 Industries exclusively for Xbox 360, and is set for release later this year.
